BELLY UP...
Chapter One
I’d always thought girls who got pregnant in high school were not the same ones who spent six
months discussing the finer points of birth control with their boyfriend and their doctor. But the
instant I pulled the pee stick from my trickle, I knew different. My heart fluttered and I bit my lip
to hold back a smile.
A smile. Wait. Was I really happy about this?
Brady banged on the door. “Have you done it yet? Let me come in.”
Sure I could sleep with him, but I had a thing about the bathroom. That was private. “Uh, no.
Give me a sec.” My voice sounded shaky.
I pulled up my capri pants while trying to talk myself down. I couldn’t be happy. Not about this. I
placed both hands on either side of the counter and stared down at the test stick, thinking there
must be some mistake. This couldn’t be real. But the two solid lines were as fixed in place as the
toilet below me.
The rattle of Mom’s car in the driveway pulled me from my stupor and I tuned into Brady rattling
the knob.
“My mom,” I practically yelled. “She’s home. Go—go talk to her.”
I was out of breath by the time I hid the evidence and bolted down the steps into our living room
seconds later.
“Hey! Mom!”
Too late. Brady was already blundering to Mom, while scratching his long, sandy bangs nervously
over his face. “We were just, um, about to…”
I blocked Mom with my back and gave him one sharp, wide-eyed shake of my head to settle his
anxiety. I’d tell him the truth later when we were alone. After I’d had a chance to sign him up for
a few acting classes.
He let out a relieved breath, which worried me slightly, but there was no time. I turned back to
Mom to attempt some damage control. Before I could kick in with my casual jabber, a gob wedged
itself in my throat over the irony of the situation. The next time I pushed Mom’s fertility meds
aside to “borrow” one of her spare pregnancy tests, I’d have to think a little harder about how I
would look her in the face again.
